School of Ministry Development

If you’ve completed a DTS and you’re looking for the next step in your service and development consider joining us at YWAM Chico and doing your School of Ministry Development.

It’s a one-year internship with lectures one afternoon a week, the opportunity to participate in one of our local ministries and then the rest of the week you’ll be working in one of our departments alongside our staff.

In the School of Ministry Development, you will discover your strengths, personality, motivations, passion and gifting as it relates to your vision and calling as a missionary.

Develop your gifts & be more effective

There is a need for leaders who are well equipped, have a passion for people, and are motivated to fulfill the great commission. The School of Ministry Development is designed to bridge the gap of theory and application by providing emerging leaders with tools, training and hands-on ministry opportunities.

Deepen your understanding and experience in the areas of evangelism, social justice and acts of kindness through teaching and weekly ministry.  Get equipped with a love for the Bible, prayer, and spiritual disciplines. Develop the kind of devotional life and relationship with the Lord that is an end in itself as well as the source of effective ministry.

What you should know

Because it takes time to process applications, we ask that you apply as early as possible – particularly if you are a foreign student needing to apply for a visa as this can take several months.

Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have completed a DTS. Also, as you are effectively short-term staff you need to have minimum monthly financial support.
U of N Credits: 12.  These credits may be applied to a U of N degree program or transferred to other participating colleges or universities.
SOMD students are effectively short-term staff and live in staff housing. For singles, that is shared housing; couples and families have homes adequate for their family size, as availability allows.

From a resort hotel built in 1923 to a comprehensive campus that covers nearly 500 acres and includes more than 80 buildings, YWAM Chico is a pedestrian-friendly campus nestled in a beautiful canyon, with many open spaces and a park-like environment that enhances the natural beauty of the canyon ridges, woods and creeks. Our campus provides something for everyone. From miles of hiking trails to tennis and volleyball courts to our Olympic-sized swimming pool, there are endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Our expansive grounds provide ample space for spending time alone with God, or hanging out with people, or just getting away from it all. The hotel lobby has sitting areas, WiFi, a bookstore and a snack bar. You can visit our prayer room and soak in God’s presence, or jam in worship in Ebenezer Hall. Get a Photo Tour of our campus.

The one-year program operates more like an internship than a normal YWAM school.  There will be a weekly lecture on Monday afternoon, small groups, weekly ministry, book reports and additional assignments which go alongside a 30+ hour per week ministry/ work assignment in the context of YWAM Chico. The program consists of four quarters (each 10-12 weeks long) with a primary theme for each quarter.  Because each quarter stands on its own, new participants can join the program at the beginning of each quarter rather than waiting for the beginning of the next year.

Notification of acceptance is given upon receiving all your required forms. Once accepted, you will receive a list of what to bring, visa information and other specifics. Since there is limited accommodation for staff, it is not always possible to accommodate everyone who applies. Whenever possible, applicants are referred to other training centers or given the option of waiting for accommodation to become available.
