Basics of Leading & Discipleship

Do you realize you have the power to be a World Changer?

Have you heard that prophesied over you, and wondered what it meant?

Have you:

  • Been told you could be a great leader, but don’t know what that looks like?
  • Desired to step into leadership and/or discipleship, and want to get developed into the best leader you can be?
  • Been put into positions of leadership and didn’t feel equipped?

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”

Leo Tolstoy

Grow in your Christian walk. Reach the nations.

Basics of Leading & Discipleship (BOLD) is an exciting entry into the realm of leading and discipleship.  During this 6-month course, you will work side by side with experienced leaders who will mentor and develop your strengths as a leader.  You will have opportunity for hands-on experience  as you partner with our DTS or Youth Ministries in a variety of ways – from living with and leading students in community; to stepping out in intercession, worship, and evangelism; helping with one-on-one discipleship and small groups; planning and implementing mid-school outreaches and mobile teams – you will have countless opportunities for growth.

The DTS or CDTS is a prerequisite to attending BOLD.

“The wicked flee when no one pursues them, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.”

Proverbs 28:1

Godly character is the cornerstone of good leadership.  You will be challenged to align your leadership and your life according to a Biblical worldview and to allow God full access into developing the whole of who you are.  God desires to see a generation of leaders who are upright and honorable.  Jesus is our greatest example of a servant leader who walked in righteousness.

Ministry Tracks

BOLD students will have the opportunity to choose one of our leadership tracks – either the SCHOOLS or YOUTH MINISTRIES track.

Schools Track

Students working with Schools will assist in planning and preparing a mid-school outreach, as well as the primary outreach.  This includes learning to budget, connect with on-the-field contacts, researching flights and locations, planning outreach schedules in accordance with U of N guidelines, etc.

Youth Track

Students working with the Youth Ministries (YM) track will assist in planning and preparing our summer Youth program (called OneEighty).  This will include meeting weekly with our YM Director for vision and intercession, contacting potential students, developing teachings and team building activities, as well as planning and preparing the outreach portion of the summer program.

Mentors

Students will be partnered with seasoned leaders to be mentored and to have a place to reflect and ask questions.  We believe in the Deuteronomy 11:19 style of discipleship – “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”  There will be a lot of opportunity to process and walk through all that you are learning and experiencing, and to seek God together for His heart in each situation.

What you should know

Because it takes time to process applications, we ask that you apply as early as possible – particularly foreign students as visas can take several months.

Requirements: This is a secondary school and applicants must have completed a DTS or CDTS prior to applying.
Students completing BOLD can receive 10-12 credits from YWAM’s University of the Nations (U of N).
BOLD students share a dormitory with students from other schools. You’ll have a roommate. Most rooms have their own bathroom. Living, dining and kitchen areas are shared. All meals during the school are served in our hotel dining room.

From a resort hotel built in 1923 to a comprehensive campus that covers nearly 500 acres and includes more than 80 buildings, YWAM Chico is a pedestrian-friendly campus nestled in a beautiful canyon, with many open spaces and a park-like environment that enhances the natural beauty of the canyon ridges, woods and creeks. Our campus provides something for everyone. From miles of hiking trails to tennis and volleyball courts to our Olympic-sized swimming pool, there are endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Our expansive grounds provide ample space for spending time alone with God, or hanging out with people, or just getting away from it all. The hotel lobby has sitting areas, WiFi, a bookstore and a snack bar. You can visit our prayer room and soak in God’s presence, or jam in worship in Ebenezer Hall. Get a Photo Tour of our campus.

All BOLD students will work alongside our DTS or 2nd Level schools (if eligible).  This will include attending school lectures from the perspective of a leader, stepping into responsibilities within the school such as worship, intercession, one-on-ones, small groups, and a variety of other needs within the school context.  In the afternoons, there will be special lectures, processing times with the school speakers, group processing times, as well as time to work on projects and step into leadership in other areas on the base – local ministries, evangelism, and base backbone ministries, to name a few.

BOLD is an intensive school with a packed schedule.  You will have very full weeks, as well as weekends.  You will be required to prepare teachings, complete a variety of book reports, present a research project, and much more.

Sundays are typically open for you to find a local church to join with in worship and fellowship.

Notification of acceptance is given upon receiving all your required forms. Once accepted, you will receive a list of what to bring, visa information and other specifics. Since there is limited space and staff, it is not always possible to accommodate everyone who applies. Whenever possible, applicants are referred to other training centers or given the option of waiting for an opening in the following school.
What you bring may vary, depending on different factors, such as season, outreach destination, etc. Every student should have a valid passport, and foreign students should have any necessary visas. You will have shared living areas, and especially on outreach, may have limited living and traveling space, so it is always a good idea to pack lightly. Once accepted to the course, you will receive a more detailed list of what to (and what not to) bring.

Dayna loves to sing loudly and off key. If you’re lucky, she may even sing you Happy Birthday in her best opera voice. She’s been in missions since 2005, and joined YWAM in 2006. She did her CDTS right here in Chico, then stayed on for 4 years before going to work with YWAM Perth, Australia for 3 years. Now she’s back, doing her best to lead kids young and old alike into mischief, but ultimately into a closer, more intimate and genuine relationship with God.

‘’Having grown up in ministry I was put in leadership roles from a young age and thought I knew what leadership was all about until I did this school … I gained an entirely fresh perspective about the heart of the servant leader, this was a powerful time in my life”
